Why Fish Oil is the "System Lubricant" Every IT
Pro Needs
The "Dry Eye" Wake-Up Call If you read my
last post, you know I just dropped P10,000 on new glasses at EO Optical
to fix my failing vision. But the optometrist told me something interesting
during the exam:
"Your hardware (eyes) is okay, but your software is
lagging because of dryness."
As an IT professional, I stare at screens for 10 hours a
day. We blink less when we focus, leading to "Computer Vision
Syndrome." The doctor’s advice? I needed better hydration—not just water,
but oil.
That sent me down a research rabbit hole on Omega-3 Fatty
Acids (Fish Oil). I used to think supplements were just expensive urine,
but the data changed my mind. Here is my analysis.
1. The "Anti-Dryness" Patch (Eye Health)
This is my #1 reason for taking it.
- The
Logic: Our tears aren't just water; they have an oily layer that
prevents evaporation. If you lack Omega-3s, that oil layer breaks down.
- The
Result: Your eyes feel gritty and tired by 2:00 PM.
- The
Fix: Studies suggest that consistent Omega-3 intake improves the
stability of that tear film. Since I started taking it, my "screen
endurance" has doubled.
2. Overclocking the Brain (Cognitive Function) Your
brain is about 60% fat. It’s the server that runs your entire life.
- The
Data: Omega-3s (specifically DHA) are the building blocks of brain
cells.
- The
Experience: I noticed that my "brain fog" clears up faster
in the morning when I'm consistent with my dosage. It’s not a magic pill,
but it feels like upgrading your RAM from 8GB to 16GB—everything just runs
smoother.
3. The "Power Supply" Protection (Heart Health)
I sit in a chair all day. That is a major risk factor for heart issues.
- The
Logic: Fish oil is proven to lower triglycerides (fat in the
blood). Think of it as keeping the cooling pipes clean so the system
doesn't overheat.
- My
Take: I view this as "preventive maintenance." It’s cheaper
to buy fish oil now than to pay for heart medication later.
How to Buy (Don't Buy Junk) Not all fish oil is
created equal. As an analyst, I looked at the "specs."
- Ignore
the Front Label: A bottle might say "1000mg Fish Oil," but
that’s just the total volume.
- Check
the Back: You want to look for EPA and DHA. These are
the active ingredients.
- The
Rule: If the EPA + DHA adds up to less than 500mg per capsule, it’s
low-quality bloatware. Don't buy it.
Conclusion You don't need to eat salmon every day
(which is expensive in the Philippines). A high-quality Fish Oil supplement is
a cost-effective way to patch your system against dryness and inflammation.
For me, it’s a non-negotiable part of my "Daily Boot Sequence."
