A 500-pounder World War II vintage bomb was found in Surigao City by a construction workers, it was found buried in just 2 meters of soil under Surigao High School. Jake Mirand, a Philippine Military Academy graduate based in Surigao City, inspected the bomb and he said that this type of bomb is reported to be an AN-M43 or M64 (Army Navy designation) the bomb containing HE/TNT/Almatol which is indicated by a visible 1 inch yellow stripe. Its blast radius can reach as far as 1,000 meters and is measuring 54 inches long with a diameter of 14 inches with a circumference of 44 inches.
The local government of Surigao City, set up a crisis committee lead by the acting City Mayor-Vice Mayor Alfonso Casurra, and conducted an evacuation for the affected area, classes were suspended for the near schools.
Army EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) personnel also arrived and they confirmed that the bomb was live, the team transferred the bomb to a secure area.
Miranda in his facebook post added that This type of bomb was used by naval aircraft like the SBD and SB2C dive bombers and the TBM/TBF torpedo bomber. A bombing raid was conducted by such aircraft from carriers USS Essex and USS Lexington in Surigao City on September 9, 1944.
This particular bomb was aimed at a Japanese Army garrison located on a hilltop, which is now Surigao High School.
